Overview

We’ve always been here. During Lesbian Visibility Week, Brown Suga will celebrate lovers and revolutionaries with queer aunties. There will be Queer Kompa dance class, performances, djs and special guests. Come to dance. Stay to talk. Leave having moved your body and expanded your circle. Whether you arrive with friends, partner(s), or on your own, you’re also invited to our hosted mixer designed to make meeting others feel easy and natural. DJs: DRYBABE, SCARBA & BONNÈT THEE MIXTRESS SPECIAL GUESTS: LADY PHYLL, BLACK LESBIAN WARRIORS and LAÏLA EL-MÉTOUI. Celebrate with an elegant afternoon-to-evening queer social and party curated by queer Black and POC folx. Brown Suga is an intentional space and gathering shaped to mobilise our community and imagine new possibilities. We centre queer women, queer Global Majority, non-binary and trans folx, and their friends. We cultivate a welcoming, good-vibes-only environment where our community can meet, learn ancestral or traditional partner dancing, and build lasting connections. The day starts with Queer Zouk & Konpa dance class led by Alexia from Zouk Love London, a London-based platform dedicated to promoting French Caribbean music and culture, with a strong focus on Zouk and Konpa. No partner or prior experience is required. As the evening unfolds, DJs take over the room with a mix of old-school, nostalgic 90s sounds, Disco, R&B, Hip-Hop, Afrobeats, Border-free music, Afro-Latin, Dancehall, and Soca, creating an atmosphere where conversation flows as easily as the music. ✨ THEME: LOVERS & REVOLUTIONARIES🔥 Wear tailored suits, dapper, flowing dresses, bold silhouettes, and expressive styling are encouraged but not mandatory.

Highlights

Queer Zouk & Konpa Class

Queer Zouk & Konpa Class

Come and try Queer Zouk & Konpa, suitable for both seasoned dancers and those new to these styles. Zouk dance developed in the 1980s alongside zouk music from Guadeloupe and Martinique, with early partner styles influenced by Caribbean social dances and rhythms popularised by Kassav'. Originating in Haiti in the 1950s, Kompa (or Konpa) was pioneered by saxophonist and bandleader Nemours Jean-Baptiste, blending African and Caribbean movement and music into a sensual partner dance. Join one of Europe’s leading Zouk platforms, Zouk Love London.

Lady Phyll (guest speaker)

Lady Phyll (guest speaker)

Lady Phyll (Phyll Opoku-Gyimah) is a Black lesbian activist and co-founder of the world's largest Pride event for queer Black & POC. She has spent decades advocating for racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and the visibility of Black queer communities in the UK. Her work centres care, community, and collective liberation, challenging the exclusion of Black lesbians and queer women from mainstream spaces while building platforms where they can be seen, heard, and celebrated.

DRYBABE

DRYBABE

DRYBABE is a genre-fluid DJ and sonic architect whose sets exist at the intersection of culture and feeling. Rooted in afro electronic, Brazilian funk, and house, the music moves with a curator’s precision and a dancer’s intuition — weaving rhythms that are as geographically expansive as they are viscerally immediate.

Alexia from Zouk Love London

Alexia from Zouk Love London

Alexia is a London-based dancer with a deep passion for rhythm and movement in all its forms. While she has explored and continues to enjoy styles ranging from Dancehall and Soca to Kizomba and Bachata, her primary focus and expertise lie in Haitian Konpa and Zouk. Over the past five years, she has fully immersed herself in these styles. She is the co-founder of Gouyad’Ness, a collective dedicated to Konpa, and also teaches at Konpa Klub in London. Alexia is also a member of the CEX Team, an international collective of dancers representing Konpa worldwide.

Black Lesbian Warriors (guest speaker)

Black Lesbian Warriors (guest speaker)

A powerful force of resistance and community, Black Lesbian Warriors is a collective of older Black lesbians who have been organising since the 1980s. Collective members Veronica McKenzie, Femi Otitoju, and Valerie (Vimalasara) Mason-John are pioneers and revolutionaries. Together, they have been holding space for intergenerational connection, political education, and the preservation of Black lesbian histories, carrying forward stories that might otherwise be erased.

TRIBE (guest speaker)

TRIBE (guest speaker)

TRIBE curates music, art, and community spaces rooted in care, creativity, and collective power. TRIBE was founded out of survivorhood. Founded out of the lack of expansive spaces for dark-skin Black trans and queer people. Through this experiment called TRIBE, they believe that community spaces don’t have to be in reaction to harm and intersecting oppressions, but in spite of them. TRIBE is a space which asks attendees to actively practice the world they want to live in. Events flow between live music, movement, workshops, and community conversations to build slow, lasting networks of joy, resistance, and belonging. Inspired by West African teachings like Gidi Gidi Bu Ugwu Eze ("In unity, there is strength"), TRIBE is not just an event series- it’s a living breathing movement for connection, liberation, and shared transformation.
