History of UK Black Pride

History of UK Black Pride

UK Black Pride, established in 2005, began as a small gathering organised by Phyll Opoku-Gyimah (widely known as Lady Phyll) and a group of Black lesbian activists. What started as a day trip to Southend-on-Sea in 2004 for Black lesbians in the UK quickly evolved into a larger, more inclusive event the following year—marking the birth of what we now know as UK Black Pride. Lady Phyll has devoted her life to championing the rights and visibility of LGBTQI+ people, with a strong focus on the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality. As the co-founder and Chief Executive of UK Black Pride, she has been instrumental in shaping the movement and has held significant roles in various organisations, including her former position as Executive Director of the Kaleidoscope Trust.

Your Hosts - The Queer Nomads

We’re Lexie and Aisha, a married couple based in London and the duo behind The Queer Nomads. Our journey began at UK Black Pride in 2017, and since then, we've travelled the world together, proudly championing visibility, representation, and joy for queer Black and POC communities. Aisha, the Founder of Moonlight Experiences, uses travel as a tool for social impact and for decolonising the travel industry, while Lexie, the Founder of Queer Weddings, creates inclusive celebrations for LGBTQIA+ couples. We're both team members at UK Black Pride: Aisha serves as Head of Community Engagement, and Lexie as Head of Operations. We are passionate about disrupting the status quo and redefining what it means to travel, love, and live as queer Black women.
