For two decades, UK Black Pride has been at the heart of queer celebration for Black and POC communities in London. It’s a space to be unapologetically Black, Brown, and queer.
UK Black Pride began with a 2004 trip to Southend-on-Sea, organised by Lady Phyll (Phyll Opoku-Gyimah) and fellow Black lesbian activists, to create a safe and joyful space for Black LGBTQIA+ members. What started as a small gathering has since evolved into the largest Pride celebration for Black and POC communities in Europe and now the world. Born out of a lack of representation in mainstream Pride events, UK Black Pride grew rapidly, driven by its inclusive and intersectional approach that addresses both LGBTQ+ rights and racial justice. Under Lady Phyll’s leadership, it has become not just an annual event, but a global movement advocating for the rights, dignity, and visibility of Black and POC LGBTQ+ communities.
